Bob the Screech Owl by Emily Michot

Miami Herald photographers Emily and Walter Michot documented the early days of a young Eastern Screech Owl that took up residence in their backyard.

Emily and Walter initially thought the noises might be coming from a opossum until their children discovered a small gray ball of fuzz perched in the Mango tree on their back deck.

Emily said:

The boys immediately named him Bob — a name they use for just about everything.

They soon realized that this cute little ball of fuzz was an Eastern Screech Owl.

Emily wrote in the Miami Herald:

Over the next few evenings, homework, dishes, and laundry were abandoned and we began  “Bob Watch”. We sat quietly out on the deck and watched him come out after sunset and begin screeching for his parents. They swiftly and silently swept in and fed him a diet of lizards and worms.

Listen to Emily tell the rest of Bob’s story accompanied by her wonderful photography in the video below.

I enjoyed your story on NPR tonight. Your photo looks just as I imagined while listening. I had to smile when you talked about your kids naming the owl Bob. My youngest son is 17 now but 10 years ago, everything was named Bob too, his imaginary friend as well as any character in his Language Arts work. There is a radio station in central/eastern North Carolina that calls itself The Bob. We always had to listen on our way to the beach….
