Traffic Camera Bird Feeder
Retired police officer Bill Angus made a bird feeder/house that looks suspiciously like a traffic camera. Not only does it feed the birds, but it gets people to slow down and observe the speed limit!
Bill and the rest of Newbottle, Durham were tired of motorists speeding through their village. They’ve been trying to get an actual traffic camera installed, but have been unsuccessful.
Bill told the Daily Mail:
Do we have to wait until somebody gets killed before they do anything? They come flying down here at 80 or 90 mph.
Another resident Kenneth Welsh said:
Speeding is a problem here. The bird box is ingenious.
Definitely ingenious! He placed the “undercover” bird feeder on a pole at the edge of his property. Since putting it up, more people are doing the speed limit. I could use one of these near me. Cars sometimes speed through the area putting wildlife and people at risk.
I completely agree with Gizmodo on this one:
And although it’s sneaky, I’d much prefer a birdhouse that looks like a speed trap than a speed trap disguised as a birdhouse.
This story has been all over the internet, so looks like the secret is out. Hopefully it continues to work and maybe he’ll make a few extra for other neighborhoods!
