Pileated Woodpecker Calls While Excavating Nest

Submitted by on February 25, 2010 – 7:08 pm4 Comments

Kootenay Nature Photos uploaded a short but fantastic video of a male Pileated Woodpecker calling while excavating his nest.

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America. They can have a wingspan of almost 3 feet. You can tell that the woodpecker in the video is a male by the red stripe on the side his face or malar region. Also, the very front of the crest or forehead is red. In females, these two regions are black.

I just really enjoy the call of the Pileated Woodpecker. I’m very fortunate to have many of these woodpeckers near my home. I’ll often hear one calling from the tip top of a particular Western Red Cedar in front of my house.
