House Finch vs. Purple Finch by mattlev12

This week Flickr user mattlev12 added a fantastic image to the Burdr Flick group of a male House Finch and Purple Finch side by side.

Sometimes people mistake one bird for the other, but thanks to matlev12 you can clearly see the differences between the two birds.

The best way to distinguish is notice the House Finch has the brownish streaks on its flanks while the male Purple Finch just has purple smudges. Also the House finches head profile will be slick and round while the Purple will have its crest up (like in this shot).
