Bread Bird
Will pigeons still eat bread even if it’s in the shape of a bird?
From Gaper’s Block:
In 2007, Chicago-based artist Dayton Castleman carved with a bandsaw and paring knife the sculpture Bread Bird from the largest and densest loaf he could find at Red Hen Bread.
Dayton recently released the video. He describes his Bread Bird experiment as:
An inquiry as to whether birds would eat bread in the shape of their own. In this case, Chicago pigeons would not.
I just found this interesting. Did the birds just not care for this particular kind of bread or did the birds recognize the shape and believe it was a real bird? What do you think?
Dayton plans to try this experiment again with some homemade bread to “give the pigeons a second chance.” I’m curious if he will get the same results.
