Trails off left wing tip by Operation Migration

Here’s a neat video of a Whooping Crane flying along side an Operation Migration ultralight. Watch what happens when the bird moves behind the wing!

Following behind the wing reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the Whooping Crane and provides extra lift allowing the bird to work less. Birds may not be able to recite the equations that prove the science behind all of this, but they definitely understand how it works.
