Joe Misiaszek of Lakeland, Florida spotted an Allen’s Hummingbird this past weekend. This is the third time he has identified a rare hummingbird in his yard.  All of which are firsts for his county, but the Allen’s Hummingbird is the first for southern Florida.

” ‘It’s always exciting to get a new bird for the county,’ he said.”

Joe’s hummingbird friendly yard has already attracted a Black-chinned hummingbird in 2004 and a Calliope Hummingbird in 1994 in addition to the common Ruby-throated Hummingbirds seen throughout the east coast of the United States.

Although the final word will come from the Florida Ornithological Society’s Records Committee, things look good. He was able to get some photos that will prove his discovery.

Way to go Joe! If only we could all be so lucky!
